Not Taking Ourselves Too Seriously
This is a ticket I gave to everyone during a session I had with our children’s ministry leaders. The teaching point is “Dare to Laugh”.
We should not take ourselves too seriously. We should laugh at ourselves because we are just odd and funny beings. And we do silly things, that warrants greater laughter. We are often too hard on ourselves. Life don’t have to be so serious that worries and stress shadows our hope and purpose. While we take God seriously, we can’t take ourselves in that level.
One of my favourite people are clowns. I like them because they are useful to point us towards when things are down, something that’s still UP. I honor them because they uplift people that are in the rut, even if its for that moment to show us its possible to see the lighter side of things. Clowns are hence just as if not more useful than people in many other vocations such as accountants, IT managers and surgeons. I have a secret ambition to be a clown one day ….. maybe not one day, maybe now. Maybe I’m a clown….. Maybe I’m not good enough… OK maybe i should really just laugh at myself and stop taking myself too seriously.
I like what G.K.Chesterton says….“The reason why angels can fly is because they take themselves lightly”. Doing what angels do, take some time to look at our situation and laugh at ourselves. It is one of the things that makes the biggest difference in my life and leadership. God seems to use me better when I have joy and laughter than when I’m stressed up and angry.
