Having A Purpose Statement
Through the years I have felt that no matter how smart we are we cannot outsmart human nature. The tendency to be misfocused, forgetful and simply lazy is stronger that what we think. That’s why one of the things that has helped me be focused in what I want to do is to write down my purpose statement and reviewing it regularly. Some people call it calling, others vision or life purpose. I call it such a good and useful thing.
A mission or purpose statement does what little can do to brings focus to our day and whatever we are doing. It helps us wake up in the morning and helps us rest and play purposefully. It brings definition to our day, empowers us and helps us live a committed life.
Add a set of values to govern how we go about our purpose and we are all set! Values are basically heart things that are important to us and defines what about us that flows out when we get cut up. Knowing and acknowledging them helps to make good decisions towards fulfilling our usefulness here on earth.
Here’s mine…. I, Hiew Hong Teck am God’s Beloved, I’m loved and directed and my purpose is…
WORK HARD, PRAY HARD, INVEST IN WHAT MAKES THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES
And here are my H-A-P-P-Y values
Have a Cup of Coffee (Don’t take myself too seriously)
Add more to Life (Maximise Time & Quality for Life)
Put People First (People before organisation)
Pay Now, Play Later (Sacrifice & Give For the Better)
Yield Myself To God (Connect to Shine For Him Everyday)
If it sounds corny, that’s because its mine. So do up yours today. And don’t be too ambitious. You’ll never get it accurate the first time. Mine’s been changing for years and is still changing.. but it gets changed lesser and lesser. The longer we review it and edit it, our life purpose gets clearer and clearer on each edition. The exercise itself is worth it. This is something that really makes the biggest difference.
I have a template here that will help:: Have a Purposeful New Year
