How to avoid Burnout
Having just avoided burnout, here’s my guide how to do it
- Ask who’s the boogey man? Find out what’s causing that feeling. There could be several reasons 1) Persevering in things that are meaningless 2) Setbacks in the goals that are important. 3) Doing too many things thinking every single thing is of priority ..4) External issues causing relationship problems and stress etc.
- Stop now! Not tomorrow, Not soon. Avoiding burnout is more important than the not so important things you are still doing. Once you are fully burned out, its no joke. So stop immediately!
- Take a serious break. Not a half hearted one. If you need to rest, Rest! Even though it was just 3 days, it’s the longest break I ever took without a working reason. And that 3 days was really amazing.
- Listen! Yes, in such a state, know God is reaching out to you. He will speak if you will listen. Rest is not enough. A getaway isn’t going to be the stand alone solution. Listen to what God is speaking through scripture, through the people you are accountable to and through what is happening. When you get it. Everything about feeling burnout will make sense.
- Ditch things that aren’t important but restore your dream fully. Yeah streamline some things you are doing, ditch some that is not in line with what you are meant to do, change your thinking pattern. Let go and whatever you do, its so that you can restore your dream fully.
- If your dream cannot be restore fully. Look towards God for refinement of that dream. Don’t proceed until you have restored your dream fully. If you never had a dream. You are doing too many irrelevant things. It’s not going to work, start dreaming!
- Lastly, you need to have someone to talk to if you need to talk! Talk to your closest friend who can give you a listening ear and some (only some) good counsel….. it may release you or it may cause you harm. It really depending on if you need to talk.
If everything else fails, stay humble and meditate upon this verse “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5) and go back to 4) and try again.
